Self Build Extension Case Study

Rapid Self Build Extension Using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)

When Clare and Bill planned their full home renovation, they needed a self build extension solution that was fast, efficient, and energy-saving. With restricted site access and a tight project timeline, Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) offered the perfect answer. Lightweight and easy to install, SIP panels also provided excellent thermal insulation, perfectly aligning with their goal of creating an energy efficient extension for long-term savings.

SIP Extension System: Fast On-Site Construction

The SIP extension was built using 142mm SIP panels for the external walls and 172mm SIPs for the roof structure. To support the new superstructure, glulam ridge beams and steel beams were installed, ensuring strength, durability, and precision. Because the SIP panels were pre-manufactured off-site, on-site assembly took just one week — allowing window installation and interior work to begin almost immediately. This dramatically shortened the overall build time compared to traditional construction methods.

Maximising Space and Light in the Self Build Extension Design

The design of the self build extensions was carefully planned to make the most of the available space and natural light. Large glazed gable ends open up the rear garden views, while a central roof light brings additional daylight into the living spaces. The result is a bright, modern interior with a strong connection to the outdoors — perfectly complementing the couple's vision for their renovation.

Why SIP Panels Are Ideal for Self Build Extensions

  • Rapid on-site installation reduces disruption and build times
  • Excellent thermal performance lowers long-term heating costs
  • Lightweight materials simplify construction on restricted sites
  • Factory precision ensures consistent build quality
  • Strong, airtight structure supports energy efficiency targets
